Junyoung Steak

I have not posted in a while. Sorry about that. I have been under a lot of stress lately. It’s getting resolved, but for a couple of months, I was pretty miserable. I need to stop worrying so much, as things get sorted out eventually, but if you are a control freak, you know that feeling like you have no control over anything can make you feel crazy.

Anyway, work is letting up, and I have been exploring my neighborhood a bit more. Sort of sad to find little gems and nearby Bank of China branches that I’d like to have found earlier (yeah, I’m moving again) but whatever.

This post is about Junyoung Steak, just a 45-minute walk down the street from me.

Look hard! The photos of the sides are visible through the window!

I first passed by this place probably months ago. I am always on the lookout for good French fries, and I noticed a picture on their menu board. The fries looked good and I told myself I needed to check this place out.

Not too long ago, I stopped in for some of those fries, and they were really good. They reminded me of what I call “diner fries.” Not the little shoestring fries you get at McDonald’s, but the ones that are a little heftier. Maybe a half inch thick on all four sides. These had the crispiness on the outside, and the tenderness on the inside. It was a nice portion too—not huge, not skimpy. I washed these down with Coca-Cola.

So good! Their food is delicious! Tamen de shiwu hen hao chi!

So the other day I decided to try a steak. They have a case right by the register, full of meat. I bought a moderately priced cut, they put it on the scale, and I paid for it, ordering some more of those great fries. That’s pretty much all I expected, plus a couple cans of Coke.

I was pleasantly surprised when they brought out my steak, cooked medium, with a side of hot veggies. Broccoli, a bit of corn on the cob, plus some sautéed onions. Salads aren’t really a thing here in China. There’s no shortage of fruits and veggies. But veggies here are mostly eaten hot. I could have had a salad; this place offers various sides, but the hot veggies were delicious. Maybe next time I will order a croissant to go with my meal.

A closer look at the food. This Hoosier born-and-bred girl loved the corn! Reminded me of home!

How much did this set me back? Cokes, fries and meal were $21.98. This will probably be my to-go steak place from now on. Outback is also just down the road, but it’s considerably more expensive. They do have the bushman’s bread though.

The décor is cozy and inviting. Tables offer chairs or booth seating, or you can sit at the counter and watch China go by. There is a sink for handwashing in the dining room. Plenty of salt, pepper and some sort of seasoning (might have been Lawry’s Seasoning Salt) on the table.

Eat your steak and watch China roar by.

Service was efficient, and I like the fact they leave you alone when you start eating. There are occasional checks for water, but they brought a large enough pitcher that I didn’t need any refills.

I selected my meat from the lower right-hand side of the case. Small and nicely marbled!

I like the fact that nicely-done pictures of side dishes are right close to the front of the restaurant, and near enough the entrance so you can peek in and see what you can get. The picture of the beautiful French fries is what drew me in. I see plenty of food photos just not done well, and as an amateur photographer, that annoys me. Also, if you aren’t fluent in the native language, having photos to point at is extremely helpful. If you are in Guangzhou, check this place out.

The sign! The sign, boss!
