I’m sorry that I haven’t been posting more often. After an unbelievable year, I have taken some time just to basically do….nothing. Maybe it’s not “nothing”, but in my world, I really haven’t been doing much. But I’m trying to de-stress myself by watching lots of Youtube.
On the other hand, I am doing some things. I’m exploring an area close by and taking more pictures. It is not quite like Zhongshan Road in Xiamen, where it was teeming with life and people and animals and it seemed like there was a photo opportunity waiting just around the corner, but it is interesting.
The weather continues to be problematic for someone like me. The gray skies have remained, which makes it about four months now. Except now, it’s raining more. The lack of sun is getting to me.
I’m getting ready to move. I’ve purposely tried to refrain from buying things like home furnishings and decorative knick-knacks. Whenever I move, I have to take them with me or else sell them. For anyone who thinks they can’t change, believe me, change is possible. I used to make excuses to go shopping back home. But even though there’s plenty of stuff to buy here, I really do make an effort to not shop. I would think with extra disposable income, like the most extra in my life, I would rather save it. So this is a good thing.
I never really had a chance to explore the city. I’m doing a bit more exploring, but I still stay around the same few kilometers near my house.
I’m understanding why Guangzhou is known for its food. I’ve had some great western as well as Chinese food, and I do understand why if you eat western a lot, you’ll go broke. But there is a dim sum restaurant that I have GOT to return to. The spring rolls were awesome. And for those wondering if Chinese Chinese food is the same as American Chinese food, it isn’t. Some of it tastes EXACTLY like it does at home. But I will say there are some dishes that I’ve never seen in American Chinese restaurants, and they are good. I had some porridge that was delicious, probably because it was quite salty. I’m a saltaholic (among other addictions) and I love it. Everything I ate that night was great, particularly the spring rolls.
Recently, I’ve eaten at a sushi restaurant (amazing) the dim sum place, a vegetarian restaurant (a very pleasant surprise) and another western place that had great cheesecake (which I didn’t get pictures of, sorry.) So I hope to post about those soon. I have a bad habit of not taking pictures of my food, probably because I’m so hungry that once the plate hits the table, I dig right in. Plus, I leave my Samsung G7 home a lot, because it’s my American phone. I take my Chinese phone everywhere, because it has my Suikang code on it, which you have to show pretty much everywhere here. My American phone seemed like it wasn’t quite working right, but the camera on it is absolute fire. Much better than my Chinese iPhone 6, and the photos just don’t seem all that great. Either that, or maybe I just don’t know how to use the cameraphone. But my Samsung has a pro mode, and the photos I’ve been getting from the riverfront are jaw-dropping for me. Perhaps I’ll start taking the Samsung.
